Helping your team keep their mojo
Ensuring that your team are happy and satisfied is key to ensuring they maintain their mojo. Routinely checking in and seeing how you can help to bolster satisfaction within your team should be a priority.
Below are my top 7 tips for maintaining employee satisfaction. If you can tick each of these off your list, you will be well on your way to having that high performing team full of enthusiasm.
1. Let everyone know what the big vision is
Think of your company as a bus. You need people onboard (pun intended) that bus who are excited and want to help it move forward. Each employee needs to know why they are on your bus and where it is heading to.
If your employees have meaning and purpose to their job they will aspire to do more - bringing more to the table each day.
Open and transparent communication is crucial if you want every individual buy in to a vision, idea or project. A company culture where communication is encouraged is one where people will work together, help each other and take a greater interest in things outside their direct role.
Every employee contributes to the bottom line. Employees should have the opportunity to learn a new skill or brush up on an old one. Not only will the company benefit, but so will they. Bigger skillset = bigger capabilities.
Don’t let work become stagnant. Learning is a great way to motivate (and you get to upskill your team at the same time). If people show a willingness to learn and grow, you need to give them to tools to do so.
4. Make work fun and flexible
For the majority of us, we spend a large proportion of our lives at the office. The workplace should be an environment that makes everyone feel relaxed and encourages productivity. If boredom kicks in, motivation will fall … closely followed by productivity.
Keeping things interesting doesn’t need to be complicated. Simple things like monthly drinks, flexible work hours and some healthy comradery whilst doing the day-to-day will go a long way.
5. Provide benefits and reward good work
No doubt the first thing that pops into your mind is money. Sure, money helps motivate, incentivise, and is a great reward, but it is not the only thing that employees want.
Introducing a benefits initiative can go a long way to helping employees find their work life balance. Discounted gym memberships can be a great place to start. Depending on the size of your business, the options can be endless. You could think about introducing summer hours - where the office closes early on a Friday.
Recognising individual efforts should always be on your radar. Your team works hard, show your appreciation every now and then. Think dinner vouchers or perhaps even a weekend away. Remember it is the small stuff that counts.
6. Personal development and clear career planning
Remember that a job someone does is a two-way exchange - and not just time for money. The people who work for you are there not only to help the organization develop and grow, but to do the same for themselves. Providing defined career pathways are excellent motivators in the workplace, and lets people know they are valued. Remember, your company’s most valuable assets are your employees.
7. Allow ownership and welcome new ideas
Taking a top down approach isn’t a great way to keep staff happy. Encourage people to share their ideas and get input from everyone. Giving people ownership over their roles and their company helps people to feel they are part of something bigger. If someone feels like they are doing something with purpose they are going to do a much better job than someone who doesn’t.
